Wrapping up Health

We spent the past week learning about doctors, dentists and ways to keep our bodies healthy.  We did an experiment with two hard boiled eggs.  One sat in coffee overnight and one sat in milk.  The coffee was meant to represent things that are unhealthy for our teeth.

Eww!!

We brushed and brushed the brown egg.  We were able to get some of the brown off, but not all of it.  We decided it was best not to eat very many unhealthy foods so we can keep our teeth strong and white!

Adeline journaled our experiment.  She drew one brown egg, one white egg and a toothbrush.  Then she told me what to write.

We took a trip to visit family and got to help Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa in the garden!  The produce was part of our yummy supper.  It doesn't get any healthier than that!

Sadie thought she'd help herself.

She learned how to go down stairs while we were there, too.  Unfortunately, she later tried her new skills  outside on the cement steps and found herself with a bloody lip.  Poor baby!

When we got home, we did an experiment with "germs."  Adeline slathered lotion on her hands, then I sprinkled on some glitter "germs."  She experimented with 3 different ways to remove germs: dry paper towel, water and soap with water.  She decided that the best way to remove germs is to wash with soap and water.

Our journaling activity dealt with healthy food choices.  The first drawing is a plate showing portions.  The second is 5-4-3-2-1 for healthy living and the pictures are Adeline's drawings of her favorite healthy foods - cucumbers and strawberries.  Yum!

We've had such nice weather, we took our Language Arts activities outside.

Matching capital letters with lowercase buddies.  Are you getting this, Sadie?

Jumping on the letters for the beginning sounds of words I said.

Running to the letter "e" when my words had the short e sound in the middle (like "bed" and "hen").

Playing hopscotch with sight words.

Bad picture of the sight words.

Sentences Adeline can read ALL BY HERSELF!  :)

Words she knows.

And Sadie enjoying the evening.  This was just cute.  :)

Whew!  What a week!  Tomorrow we begin our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom unit.  We have been using the book throughout the year adding letters to our tree, but for the next week or so we will do some special activities with the book.  It should be fun!

How to Make an Apple Pie...

and See the World is our book this week!  So we started the school week a little early and made an apple pie on Sunday afternoon.  Adeline LOVED helping!  She put all the filling ingredients in the bag and shook it up to coat the apples.

Then made the top crust look pretty...

And TaDa!  A very yummy pie!  Daddy thought this was a great project!  We read How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World while the pie baked.  The book travels around the world finding the ingredients for the pie.  We will "visit" one country a day.  Sunday we checked out Italy where the main character found "superb semolina."

We also made a bunch of applesauce.  It was pretty tasty, too!

I didn't manage any pictures on Monday.  We spent the whole day outside.  We took our work out to the lawn and soaked up the sunshine while practicing our reading, writing and arithmetic.  :)  In the afternoon, we joined our homeschool friends for another VeggieTales co-op and a long walk/bike ride/scooter ride/watermelon picnic.  It was a great day!

Today has been another fun day.  Braxton is improving a LOT in his scissors skills.  He did his Farm Number Book all by himself today!

Adeline had a cut and paste activity, too.  She's singing while she works.  :)

Look, Jessica!  She did her music homework!  We made a list of all the places Adeline has heard music this past week.  I love that her very first response was "the wind outside."

Ten Red Apples is a fun book that includes skills for both kids.  The farmer in the book starts with an apple tree that has 10 red apples on it.  One by one, they are picked off by animals.  On each page, we placed pompoms on the apples.  Braxton got lots of practice counting to ten.

Adeline thought this tree should have all green apples.  She also did a tree with all yellow apples.  I think she was paying attention at the orchard Friday!

When the animal eats an apple, Adeline removes it from the tree.  Then we count how many apples remain and say 6 apples minus 1 apple = 5 apples.  It was a nice intro to subtraction.

Our new vowel sound today was the short letter e.  Adeline made this one.

She also had some practice sorting words into their word families.

And spelling out sight words.

Then we played Twister!  Good color recognition practice for Braxton and left/right practice for Adeline.  Not to mention, it's just plain fun!

The kids thought I needed a turn after they were done.  You will note that there are NO pictures of that.  :)

We finished up the day re-reading How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World.  We located Sri Lanka and learned that cinnamon comes from the bark of the kuranda tree that grows there.  It was also Vocab Day for our book, so as we read it, I explained the "big" words.

We are also learning about the dentist this week.  We read Curious George Visits the Dentist and Doctor De Soto.  We talked about losing teeth which had Adeline very excited.  She's been pretending she has a loose tooth ever since her friends started losing teeth this summer.  This morning she told me, "Mom, this tooth is lazy!  Sometimes it wiggles and sometimes it doesn't."  She can't wait for her teeth to start coming out, but I'm quite alright with them staying put!

We started an experiment this afternoon with hard boiled eggs, milk and coffee.  They need to sit overnight, so that project will be finished tomorrow.

Wrapping the week up!

We finished up our week with a fun trip to a local orchard.  But first we had to get our work done:

Adeline worked on some see and spell cards.

Braxton did his AWANA homework.

And Sadie hammed it up.  The spots on her face?  Evidence of the glitter she tried to consume.

Braxton thought his do-a-dot "Bb" sheet was lots of fun!

And then he worked on his Farm Number book.

And some size sorting...

Adeline wanted to use the do-a-dot stamper, too, so we used it on an uppercase letter assessment.  She did well.

And since it was Friday, we added the letter B to our tree, then read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  We also read a fun new book, Boom Chicka Rocka, as well as one about Golden Delicious apples and a Max & Ruby mail book.  Whew!

THEN we got to go to the orchard!

I was busy picking raspberries when I felt a little hand reach up to my bucket.  Sadie had brought me a raspberry!  So sweet!

Four pounds of raspberries later (plus several dozen in some little tummies), we moved on to apples!  Sadie thought she'd try crawling through the smallest openings.

We picked 30 pounds of apples!!  The biggest challenge was getting us all back out of the orchard with our treasures.  We had such a good time!  If I still have ambition after getting all this produce "put up," we just might make another trip.
